Buffalo Nickels 1913 - 1938

After almost 30 years of minting the Liberty Head Nickel, the Buffalo Nickel was created.  Several designs were submitted to be considered for the new nickel but ultimately Sculptor James Earle Fraser's design showing a Native American on the obverse and an American Bison on the reverse, was chosen. This coin was minted by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938.

This coin pays respect to the cultural heritage and the natural beauty of the United States. This design choice was not without controversy, as some critics raised concerns about the stereotypical depiction of Native Americans. However, the Buffalo Nickel became a beloved and iconic coin and is highly collected by coin collectors to this day.
